Thriving Healthy Community through Primary Healthcare

General Practice South is one of the larger Divisions of General Practice in Australia, supporting over 300 GPs and  90 general practices in the south of Tasmania (for details see our Profile).

We are focussed on strengthening the capacity of general practitioners and their staff to improve quality care, and continually improve the quality, productivity and sustainability of their practice. The Division's services are underpinned by values that promote quality, respect, relevance accountability and teamwork.

General Practice South's services focus on building practice capacity, general practice clinical education, and assisting general practices to work within the wider health system. General Practice South provides:

  • quality education and training for GPs and general practice staff
  • services building stronger, more viable practices, and supporting practice staff, including nurses
  • practice support with systems development and ongoing quality improvement
  • tailored assistance to GPs and practice staff
  • collegiate peer support and networking opportunities
  • advocacy on local and national issues to decision makers
  • liaison with health care providers and consumers to improve interaction with general practice and to ultimately improve patient care.

General Practice South is part of the Australian General Practice Network, comprising 111 Divisions of General Practice and 8 State Based entities. Divisions nationally deliver a range of services to improve and address access, integration, chronic disease management and population health.

In southern Tasmania, General Practice South has strong links with general practice, the major hospitals, government and non government services, and other organisations with an interest in primary health care. Our Health Consumer Network enables us to have productive dialogue with consumer and community organisations on quality care issues. These relationships, along with the views of GPs, enable us to advocate for the needs for general practice.

General Practice South is an independent, incorporated body governed by an elected Board comprising GPs and Independent Directors. We are principally funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. Funding is also sourced through service partnerships with other organisations. GPs and Associate members contribute to the Division with their annual membership fee.
