  • provides authorisations, assistance and clinical support to medical practitioners in regard to Schedule 8 prescribing

  • is a point of reference for information about a patient's opioid history and also any concerns/information in relation to other drugs that are subject to misuse or abuse


Private Allied Health Professionals

Referrals can be made using a Mental Health Treatment Plan for patients who have alcohol use or drug use disorders. Tobacco use disorder is not regarded as a mental disorder for the purpose of Mental Health Treatment Plans.
A number of local providers listed on the Mental Health Professionals resource have indicated their area of specialty includes substance abuse.

Private Psychiatrists

Information on Tasmanian Psychiatrists is available on the RACGP website.  (You will need your RACGP user name and password)
Several Psychiatrists on the database have indicated they see patients for substance use disorders.
General Practice South has a list of Psychiatrists in southern Tasmania June 2010 Update and some have indicated they specialise in alcohol and drug management.


Relationships Australia

 Integrated Care Service (no cost to patient) 

  • for low income patients with mental health disorders such as anxiety or depression (who may also have an alcohol or drug use disorder) and who have limited or no access to other psychological services

Suicide Prevention Pilot (no cost to patient) 

  • for patients at low to moderate risk of suicide

  • immediate psychological treatment and short term support for up to two months

  • available for adults and adolescents

  • free of charge for carers and runs for three hours, once a week for eight weeks

  • individual outreach service currently operates in the northern suburbs of the Greater Hobart area from New Town through Glenorchy to and including the Derwent Valley, Bridgewater, Gagebrook and the Brighton area
